Meet The Trainer

Marisa VanDyke is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and Yoga Instructor. Since she moved to Anchorage over a year ago, Marisa has been busy training at local fitness studios, in client's homes, and now from her newly opened business.

Marisa specializes in fitness training for the beginner student. She enjoys teaching clients to progress slowly and continually challenge their bodies. Her exercise programs use a mix of strength training tools, cardio drils, and flexibility challenges. A Studio for Beginners

While training clients around Anchorage, Marisa's clients would often tell her how they would buy gym memberships with the best intentions, and then never go. When asked why, the answers ranged from the gym feeling too big, the client feeling uncomfortable among young, fit gym members, the machines being confusing, or the classes being too hard. Either way, its well known that the gym can be a very intimidating place!

Build Fitness Studio takes the intimidation out of exercise. A small studio, clients exercise privately, with the assistance of a personal trainer at all times. The studio itself gets great light, and has a beautiful view of the Chugach Mountains.

Another benefit of private exercise? You control the temperature, the music volume, and even the type of music! If you hate the typical exercise tunes, bring your own CD.

Women Only?

I get this question often, and the best way to answer is that Build Fitness is a women mostly training facility. Since the training is private, I do accept men from time to time. It all depends on the person's situation and training goals. For example, I do not have the equipment for heavy weight training, nor do I train atheletes. The focus of Build training is more core training, creating a better sense of balance, coordination, and muscle tone. Clients often are working to overcome an illness or disability, start an exercise program after years of a sedentary life, or simply in need of an exercise plan that incorporates stress reduction. So if a male client had goals similar to those, he would likely be accepted into private training.

Group classes remain women-only. This is to help ensure that the training environment stays as comfortable as possible. If interest was expressed to have men-only group classes, that could be arranged.

A few popular arrangements are Couple Training and Family Training. Getting your boyfriend or husband to yoga class is often a far-fetched dream...but at Build Fitness, we've got couples who do private yoga training and enjoy every session (the guys do normally say they'd never admit to their friends that they attend)! Additionally, families with young children will often do sessions with their family to help create a good example. Kids love to compete with mom & dad, and get a kick out of being able to stand on one leg longer!

The Building Blocks of Fitness

The Build training philosophy is based on a balance of cardio, strength, and flexibility training. Clients will start an exercise program with basic balance and core training. Once a good base has been established, additional goals such as bone density, endurance, and strength can be added.

I feel that flexibility should be a much bigger focus for some people, and often include exercises into the workout to establish better flexibility. Many people have muscle imbalances due to reptitive motion at work, bad body mechanics and posture, or old injury. Flexibility training can help to reverse some of this and assist us in becoming more comfortable in our own bodies. Recently, one doctor exclaimed, "I haven't been able to touch my toes in YEARS!"

One thing that often hinders a person's exercise plan is that they lack self-confidence or are scared to hurt themselves. Build Fitness recognizes that one of the best benefits of exercise is the boost it can give a person's confidence. As a trainer, I enjoy helping clients reach goals they never thought were possible, and see how those successes spill over into other areas of the client's life!
